Southern Sudan Exempt from US Sanctions


Sometimes, people ask me: “Is it legal to work in Sudan?” The answer is “Yes and no.” The U.S. imposed sanctions in 1997 against the whole country, but in 2006, an Executive Order issued by the Bush Administration lifted sanctions against SOUTHERN Sudan. NGOs and companies (except the petroleum industry) can now work and serve in southern Sudan.
