Mentioning Logo along the way, Gary S. Stager has some interesting thoughts on what he sees as the de-evolution of computer literacy and computing in general.
There was once a time in the not so distant path when educators were on the frontiers of scientific reasoning and technological progress. Curriculum was transformed by computing. School computers were used less often to “do school” and more often to do the impossible.
Some additional notes:
On Twitter, literacy scholar Annette Vee retweeted this story as well, and she had some great, concise reservations about this piece. She remarked that Stager conflates programming with Computer Science. He also attacks social media in the piece, which I think produces unnecessary polarities/extremes on how such procedural or computer literacies can be achieved. Afterall, educators are supposed to be the one’s thinking about how to construct the processes in a classroom to scaffold such nuances for their students to explore.
